How to Use 1 MTP Kit + 14 Misoprostol
An MTP Kit typically contains:
1 tablet of Mifepristone (200 mg)
4 tablets of Misoprostol (200 mcg each)
Some doctors recommend using extra misoprostol to increase effectiveness, especially if pregnancy is further along. Here’s how the regimen usually works:
Step 1: Take Mifepristone (Day 1)
Swallow 1 tablet of Mifepristone (200 mg) with water.
This blocks progesterone, a hormone needed to sustain pregnancy.
Most people do not feel any immediate effects, but some may experience mild cramping or spotting.
Step 2: Take Misoprostol (Day 2 or 3)
Wait 24-48 hours after taking Mifepristone.
Take 4 tablets of Misoprostol (200 mcg each) = 800 mcg total.
There are three ways to take misoprostol:
Buccally (placing 2 tablets on each side of the mouth between the cheek and gum for 30 minutes, then swallowing the remaining parts).
Sublingually (placing all 4 tablets under the tongue for 30 minutes, then swallowing what’s left).
Vaginally (inserting the tablets deep into the vagina).
Cramping and bleeding usually start within 1 to 4 hours after taking misoprostol.
Step 3: Taking Extra Misoprostol If Needed
Doctors sometimes recommend an additional 2 doses (800 mcg each) of misoprostol (8 more tablets) in case the abortion is incomplete. This can be done as follows:
If bleeding is light or has not started within 3-4 hours after the first dose:
Take another 4 tablets of Misoprostol (800 mcg total) using the same method.
If the abortion is still incomplete after another 4 hours:
Take a final dose of 4 Misoprostol tablets (800 mcg total).
This brings the total Misoprostol used to 14 tablets (2800 mcg).
What to Expect
Heavy bleeding with clots (similar to a very heavy period).
Strong cramps, nausea, fever, chills, diarrhea, or vomiting.
Bleeding should slow down within a few days and continue as light spotting for up to 2 weeks.
When to Seek Medical Help
Extremely heavy bleeding (soaking more than 2 pads per hour for 2 consecutive hours).
Severe pain that does not go away with painkillers.
Fever over 100.4°F (38°C) lasting more than 24 hours.
No bleeding at all after taking misoprostol.
Follow-Up
A pregnancy test or ultrasound after 1-2 weeks confirms if the abortion is complete.
